The D Series

Collection held in Christchurch

The D Series is a collection of about 10000 discs dating from about 1935 through to the late 1950's. Programme material is varied but includes many war-time radio newsreels, election addresses, current events programmes such as Radio Digest , Australian serial dramas and brass band contests. Approximately 400 discs relate to Maori subjects, ranging from recordings of traditional waiata, oratory and tributes to famous people. Most discs are direct-cut acetate with an aluminium core, but also include acetate discs with steel, glass and cardboard cores, and vinyl discs. The audio is still retrievable from the great majority of discs.
A database of basic disc details (track information, length, date etc.) is available for online searching.
